Driver Assessment

Assessment of drivers before hiring or deployment: a written test, an oral round and a practical assessment, so an employer knows what a driver can do against the experience the driver claims.

When it is used

Most accidents come down to the driver rather than the vehicle. An assessment shows what a driver can do, and what the driver still needs to learn.

What is assessed

  1. 01

    Licence check

The driving licence is examined for validity, vehicle class and any endorsement the job needs, such as hazardous goods.

  2. 02

    Written test

Rules of the road, regulations, road signs and markings.

  3. 03

    Oral round

Questions put in person, to confirm what the written test shows and to cover what it cannot.

  4. 04

    Basic medical check

Non-invasive: general physical condition, eyesight and colour vision.

  5. 05

    Education and literacy

Whether the driver reads and writes as the job requires. For dangerous goods, Rule 9 sets this out.

  6. 06

    Practical driving

Driving ability on the road, and the driver's attitude behind the wheel.

  7. 07

    Vehicle knowledge

Basic maintenance and mechanical knowledge, and the daily checks a driver should make.

  8. Written report

For each driver: the result of every part, an overall result, and the training needed, if any.

Set to your requirement

The parts and the standard a driver must meet can be set to your organisation's own requirement, and are agreed before the assessment, so every driver is assessed against the same criteria. Where it is conducted, and how many drivers are assessed together, is agreed with you.

Where training is needed

A driver who falls short on a part can be trained for it. The courses most often run after an assessment:
